Barbara
Babbit Kaufman is one of America's consummate female entrepreneurs.
Barbara is the author of Attitude [2004, Longstreet Press] and is
a different kind of motivational speaker. Her lively and passionate
speeches and training seminars address a variety of topics including
personal and professional motivational strategies, sales training,
business entrepreneurship, marketing and branding, women's issues,
and inspirational balance. Barbara is a graduate of Georgia State
University and received her CPA. Although she started her career as
a tax specialist, Barbara has excelled in a host of specialty areas
from business ownership, accounting and finance, branding and marketing,
public relations, media and community leadership.

Well
known for her informative and lively presentations, Kaufman speaks
on business and motivation at venues nationwide. Kaufman is the
former president and cofounder of Chapter 11* The Discount Bookstore,
a thirteen-store chain of successful discount bookstores in Georgia.
And, she is a Professor of Retailing at Georgia State University
in Atlanta. Barbara recently founded her own consulting business
focusing on operations and financial planning for small- to medium-sized
companies, BBK Enterprises, Inc.
Kaufman
started her career as a Certified Public Accountant, working as
a tax specialist with Alexander Grant & Company (now Grant Thornton).
She then helped found and served as Chief Financial Officer of Turtleâs
Music, a highly successful chain of music stores that is now Blockbuster
Music. While raising her children,
Kaufman
also started or co- founded several successful businesses, including
Bubble Gum, Inc., a childrenâs clothing store; Therapy, Inc., a
ladiesâ clothing store; and Chapter 11, which grew and prospered
despite competition from national megastores.
As
her entrepreneurial career grew, Kaufman began another career as
a motivational speaker, offering some of her business strategies
to audiences nationwide. Her speaking engagements include addresses
to the National Association of Women Business Owners, Sinai University,
GE Small Business Solutions, Georgia State Universityâs Women in
Business Leadership Forum, YoungBucks Young Professionals of Buckhead,
numerous Rotary Clubs throughout the region, Harvard Alumni Club,
Women's Chamber of Commerce, Brenau University Career Day, Tetley
Distinguished Leader Lecture Series at Kennesaw State University,
American Marketing Association, The Entrepreneurship Institute,
Governor's Conference for Women Business Owners, TRC staffing, BellSouth
and many other civic groups and corporations. She is on the board
of Omni National Bank.
Kaufman is an alumna of Leadership Atlantaâs class of 1995 and was
honored as a finalist in the 1995 Entrepreneur of the Year Award
and the 2001 Small Business Person of the Year. In 1998, she was
selected as one of Atlanta magazineâs ãWomen Making a Markä and
as ãa diva of Atlantaâs business worldä by Business to Business
magazine. In January 1999, Georgia Trend magazine listed Kaufman
as one of the 100 most powerful and influential Georgians. In 2000,
Kaufman won the Mass Mutual Blue Chip Enterprise Award. In 2001,
she was selected as Georgia State Universityâs School of Accountancy
Distinguished Alumna. In 2002, she was selected as Woman Business
Owner of the Year by the National Association of Women Business
Owners. In 2003, Kaufman was named ãOne of Atlantaâs Defining Womenä
by the Atlanta History Center. Kaufman balances a career in business
with active leadership in charitable causes. She is a member of
Georgia State Universityâs Board of Advisors and sits on the Board
of Directors for Kudzu Book Traders. She serves as a board member
of The American Jewish Committee, Davies Library, and the Cliff
Valley School. A native of Atlanta, Kaufman has been active in political
causes, serving on the political campaigns of Atlanta Mayor Maynard
Jackson, Atlanta City Council member Rob Pitts and U.S. Rep. Denise
Majette.
Married
to Richard Kaufman, the couple has five children together: Jennifer,
25; Michelle, 24; Lauren, 23; Betsy, 22; and Garrett, 19.
